Tips for Visiting the Colorado Ice Castles with Kids

0

The Colorado Ice Castles are back! If you haven’t experienced this magical winter event, this year is the time.

Ice Castles will be at a new location this year, in Cripple Creek, Colorado. The event is estimated to run from January 13-February 3, and pricing is dependent on peak or off peak times. Dates may open earlier or later depending on weather. Check the website at www.icecastles.com for tickets and more information.

At Ice Castles, you can explore ice caverns and view beautifully crafted sculptures. Kids can crawl through tunnels and zip down ice slides. There are giant archways to walk under and ice thrones to sit on and feel like you are a real life Elsa! This year you can also book a private alcove within the castles. Ice Castles are beautiful during the day or night, but the lights in the ice can be especially pretty after dark.

Tips for Taking Kids to the Colorado Ice Castles

Dress in appropriate clothing

Wear snow boots with good traction and bring lots of layers. Waterproof pants and gloves will keep little ones warm especially after multiple trips down the ice slides. Other tips for what to wear are found here.

Choose babywearing instead of a stroller

Since Ice Castles are made from snow and ice, strollers can be difficult to navigate within the castle area. Babywearing is a good option for those with little ones who aren’t yet walking. Sleds are also permitted to pull children who would otherwise be in a stroller.

Buy tickets and sign waiver in advance

All guests have to sign a waiver with ticket purchase. It is recommended to buy your tickets in advance, as the event times often sell out and are not always available on site.

Bring an external charger for your phone

You won’t want to miss the amazing photo ops, but remember that phone batteries drain faster in the cold. Bring an external charger (and cord!) to keep your phone charged.

Other things to keep in mind:

  • Parking is available near the site.
  • No outside food and drink is allowed.

Ice Castles are a unique experience and fun for the whole family. Go explore a magical winter wonderland and create new memories this holiday season!

Elizabeth Schnakenberg
Hi! I’m Elizabeth. I grew up in Overland Park, Kansas and have been living in Colorado for almost 10 years. I met my husband in Denver and we have two wonderful daughters. My oldest is 6 and my youngest is 17 months. I am a former preschool teacher turned health insurance broker. I do my best to juggle kid activities, two kitties and our dog and everything in between. I love the outdoors and being close to the mountains. Our family is slowly checking visiting National Parks off our list and hoping to instill a love and respect for nature in our children. I enjoy reading, indulging in Italian food, spending time with friends and family and trying to improve my disc golf skills. I’m looking forward to connecting with more Colorado mamas!
