Denver Preschool Program Helps Families Find and Pay for Preschool

High-quality early childhood education, like preschool, plays a critical role in early development and can boost learning for a lifetime of success. Choosing the right preschool for your little learner will build a strong foundation for them to thrive in kindergarten and beyond.

Children who attend a quality preschool program are more prepared for kindergarten, which leads to:

  • Stronger early language, literacy, and math skills
  • Higher likelihood of graduating high school
  • Increased probability of attending college
  • A better chance at succeeding in their careers

While the benefits are undeniable, high-quality preschool can be the largest expense a family faces each month, often costing more than housing or college tuition. For some Denver families, that expense can consume up to 40% of their income.

Since 2006, the Denver Preschool Program (DPP) has been dedicated to assisting families living in the City and County of Denver in accessing and affording high-quality preschool education. Working together with over 250 preschools, DPP proudly provides tuition support to families without any consideration of household income, the neighborhood they reside in, or their immigration status. DPP aims to make quality preschool education accessible to all.

For DPP, equitable access to preschool is paramount. To ensure families with the greatest need are able to afford the highest quality early education, tuition credits are distributed on a sliding scale. This creates access to preschool for students who may not have otherwise been able to attend. In some cases, families may have up to 100% coverage on tuition costs. DPP’s average tuition credit was $788/month per student for the 2021-2022 school year.

If that’s not enough incentive to get you to learn more, we’ve assembled a list of five things parents should know about DPP.

  1. Tuition credits are available to all families with a 4-year-old, and a limited number of families with a 3-year-old.
  2. There are more than 250 preschool providers (including Denver Public Schools) that participate in DPP’s tuition credit program. Your child must be enrolled in a participating program to receive tuition support.
  3. Tuition credits can cover up to 100% of preschool costs for eligible families.
  4. Colorado’s Universal Preschool (UPK Colorado) support can be combined with DPP tuition credits, giving families even more financial support for quality preschool.
  5. Applications are accepted year-round–but don’t delay, apply today for the upcoming school year at dpp.org/enroll/.

Preschool can have many positive effects for children and their families, and the quality of the preschool program is directly correlated with the benefits. DPP’s work, on behalf of Denver families, invests directly in the quality of preschool programs throughout the City and County of Denver. This ensures that more children have access to high-quality preschool that provides learning and social skills they need to be prepared to succeed in school and life.
