Buena Vista, Colorado, is a small town with big charm. Hot Springs, charming restaurants, river rafting and mountain views are the major draws. The two hour and 30 minute drive from Denver feels like a cinch and offers adventure along the way. Close to other resort towns, Buena Vista often becomes the slower sanctuary for those wanting a little freedom from the crowds during peak seasons. Enjoy the slower pace without sacrificing the fun on a weekend away in Buena Vista.

On the Way Stop
Break up the drive with a stop at Manitou Springs for lunch and physical fitness. Not for the faint of heart, the 2,744 stair climb of Manitou Springs of the Pikes Peak Region is a feat to conquer. For those who find the entire climb too daunting, fear not. Beautiful hiking trails veer off the stairs often, creating a downhill and picturesque descent down to the car. Our trio made it up about halfway before deciding hunger pangs were more important to capitalize on than the conquering of the mountain, and we thoroughly enjoyed our leisure walk down through winding paths and overlooks.
For Those Who Seek Adventure
Rafting is a huge tourist draw of the area during the summer months. From relaxing, short trips to days long, rip-roaring excursions, the options are plentiful. Several companies inhabit the area, but due to the popularity, advance reservations are a must. Plan for at least a few days notice!
Ski Cooper, a nearby downhill skiing resort, offers a unique and must-do experience. Our group took a one-mile snowshoeing trail that ended at the most charming yurt, turned restaurant, called Tennessee Pass. The snow and tree lined path made the trek a cinch, and the food was worth coming back time and time again. Reservations must be made in advance, so plan early for this day of outdoor fun.
As cross-country skiing novices, our curiosity for the sport was outweighed by the uncertainty of how to properly use the equipment, wanting safety to be our first priority. Hiring a guide who took us to Collegiate Peaks Campground for a half-day lesson and journey turned out to be a wise decision. Hilarity ensued at times when we were unsteady at first, but by the end we all agreed the outing was our favorite part of the trip. The guide led us to a trail we would not have found on our own, and provided helpful instruction.
Temperate climates and an abundance of lakes and rivers make Buena Vista a sought-out destination for anglers. Guided fishing is a blast! They do the hard work for you, teach you the ropes and assist in catching some feisty fish. A half-day tour is the perfect amount of time to have fun, learn something new and enjoy the beauty of the waters. With BV’s climate, fishing can take place all year!
It wouldn’t be a mountain town without hiking. Our favorites include the Huron Peak via the Northern Trail and the Alpine Tunnel Trail. Both are a bit of a drive, but worth it for the glittering views.
Finally, carve out time to gawk at the Arkansas River surfers (yes, you read the correctly) as they navigate the waves on boards and kayaks. It is truly remarkable the skills the possess! The Buena Vista River Park is where it takes place, and is also part of a larger network of hiking and bike trails, as well as dog parks.
For Those Who Want Relaxation
Hot springs are a huge attraction for those seeking to soothe achy muscles or relax and take in the mountain air. Cottonwood Hot Springs and Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort are popular attractions worth visiting.
For more relaxation, enjoy the picturesque setting while lounging and taking in all the beauty at Cottonwood Lake. Make the scenic drive from Cottonwood Campground to Mineral Basin when visiting. Splash and swim around if the weather permits.
The main drag of BV houses some unique boutique shopping. Hi-Lonesome is a favorite, as is The Trailhead and Rock Paper Scissors. Stroll along, stopping for coffee, an array of aromatic baked goods offered along Main Street, and always stop to look at the mountains in the foreground.
Where to Stay in Buena Vista
The Surf Hotel is dreamy and a top choice for a romantic setting or indulgent girls getaway. Set within an adorable square with high end shopping and restaurants, you will want to sit on the patio of the in-house restaurant and listen to local bands play at “The Lawn” night after night.
The Inn at Railroad and Main is a boutique hotel in the heart of town. It feels modern yet nostalgic, luxurious yet approachable, beautiful yet comfortable.
Cabins, tiny homes on the river, apartments on the town square and even yurts can be found all over BV, with the help of VRBO or Airbnb.
Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort provides easy access to the beautiful and relaxing springs, along with mountain views and spa amenities. This is an especially wonderful place to visit during the colder months.
Where to Eat in Buena Vista
The tantalizing aroma of fresh bread baking will make you return again and again to Simple Eatery. The shop is home to a clothier and guided tours as well.
Overlook Mount Princeton on the charming patio of House Rock Kitchen. A self-proclaimed healthy eatery that promises a great atmosphere and tasty food. It offers ample choices as well as house made brews.
Eddyline Brewery has a wide selection to suit a range of tastes, a great patio, perfectly crafted cocktails and a short walk if staying at the Surf Hotel.
Make Buena Vista your next weekend destination. You won’t be sorry.
